IASH celebrates five new Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellows

Marie Curie logo

Amidst the global pandemic, research continues across the arts, humanities and social sciences. IASH is delighted to celebrate five recent Fellows who have each been awarded one of the most prestigious awards in academia, the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Fellowship. Many of their projects lead directly from the work they carried out in Edinburgh, highlighting the important role of Institutes of Advanced Study in nurturing the careers of scholars at all stages.

Writing Retreat at the Burn

The Burn

In February, four IASH Fellows visited the Burn for a writing retreat, along with members of the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures. The Burn is a country house set in a beautiful site of special scientific interest (SSSI) between Dundee and Aberdeen, and is regularly used by academic groups from around the UK. The Fellows offered these reflections on their experiences.

50 years of research at IASH

Timeline

To mark 50 years since our foundation in 1969, we have made a short film about research at IASH, profiling two recent projects by 2018-19 EURIAS Junior Fellow Dr Isabel Kusche and 2018-19 Daiches-Manning Memorial Fellow Dr Elizabeth Ford. Dr Kusche reflects on her investigations of big data analytics and the relationship between politicians and voters, including the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Featured Fellow: Xiaona Wang

Xiaona Wang

I feel deeply honoured to receive this year’s Susan Manning Postdoctoral Fellowship at IASH. It seems to be a scarcely believable accolade to someone who still feels a novice at trying to understand European history and culture. I was originally trained in the natural sciences, specializing in chemistry (in China). I then became interested in the history of Western science, and soon realized that I had to come to Europe to study these matters.
