Edinburgh is a national capital and has rich cultural and archival resources. The University of Edinburgh was founded in 1583 and, with over 16,000 students, is one of Britain’s leading research universities. The University Library is an outstanding research resource, and has particularly rich special collections, especially in Imperial History and Scottish Literature. The National Library of Scotland is one of three deposit libraries in the United Kingdom and has unparalleled resources for scholars. A number of cultural institutions also have rich research resources; these include the National Museums of Scotland, the National Galleries of Scotland, the National Archives of Scotland and the Royal College of Physicians.
