The Isabel Dalhousie Fellowship

This Fellowship was created by Sir Alexander McCall Smith and named after the heroine of The Sunday Philosophy Clubone of his successful series of novels.

The first holder of the Isabel Dalhousie Fellowship, in 2012, was Professor Edward Mendelson.  During his Fellowship he delivered a lecture on “Auden and ‘the Flesh We Are’” at St Cecilia’s Hall.

The Daiches-Manning Memorial Fellowship in 18th-Century Scottish Studies

The Daiches-Manning Memorial Fellowship in 18th-Century Scottish Studies is co-sponsored by the Eighteenth-Century Scottish Studies Society (ECSSS), the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ASECS), and the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh (IASH). The Fellowship is for two to six months and may be taken at any time of the year.

Distinguished Visiting Fellowships

These Fellowships are offered by invitation on an occasional basis to Honorary Graduates of the University and distinguished figures in business or public life who wish to spend a period of reflection and research aside from their normal responsibilities, in any area of the Humanities and Social Sciences, and would value participation in a stimulating community of international scholars.

Visiting Research Fellowships

The latest round, for visits between August 2026 and July 2027, closed on 27 February 2026.

The Visiting Research Fellowships are the oldest Fellowships offered by IASH, running since 1970. Visits are typically between two and six months. No limitation is placed on the area of research within the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. The Institute exists to foster interdisciplinary activities in the Humanities and Social Science and has a particular interest in using its visiting fellowships to build international collaborations.

The David Hume Fellowship

The Fellowship

The David Hume Fellowship is for 3-4 months in the academic year 2019-20. The David Hume Fellow will be an established scholar in any aspect of Hume studies. The Fellowship is intended to provide an opportunity for scholars to come to Edinburgh to work on the important Hume resources available in the city’s libraries and archives. The successful applicant will be expected to be in residence in Edinburgh for the duration of the Fellowship and to participate fully in IASH activities.

The American Philosophical Association Fellowship

The American Philosophical Association (APA) sponsors one Visiting Research Fellowship per year at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, the University of Edinburgh.

There is no funding associated with this award but the APA Fellow has a private office in the Institute, is a member of the Institute’s lively research community and has full borrowing rights at Edinburgh University Library. The Fellowship is for a period of 2 to 6 months. Applicants must be members of the APA.
