We are delighted to present the expanded version of Professor Lord Stern's recent Fulbright Legacy Lecture, entitled The best of centuries or the worst of centuries? Leadership, governance and cohesion in an interdependent world. The lecture was given at the University of Edinburgh on Wednesday 6th June 2018, and was chaired by the Principal, Professor Peter Mathieson.

Steve’s recent books:

The SAGE Dictionary of Sociology (London: Sage 2006) - With over 1000 entries on key concepts and theorists, The SAGE Dictionary of Sociology provides full coverage of the field, clarifying the technical use of apparently common words, explaining the fundamental concepts in candid and entertaining ways, and introducing new and unfamiliar terms.

Research Projects

At present Steve is dividing his time between IASH (Link) and the STIS subject area. Overall, he is focusing on four types of research.

In his role at IASH, Steve is involved in directing the institute and in promoting the work conducted there by post-doctoral and early-career fellows and by the numerous academic visitors. He has overall responsibility for the academic direction of IASH and is centrally involved in its thematic focus areas: environmental humanities, medical humanities and digital humanities.

Project title: Changing Climates, Moving Minds

This study examines the representation of the inter‐relationship of migration with spiritual and mental health in literature until the early twentieth‐century. In addition to literature, it will examine relevant discussions in media, psychology, philosophy and climate science.
