Steve’s recent books:

The SAGE Dictionary of Sociology (London: Sage 2006) - With over 1000 entries on key concepts and theorists, The SAGE Dictionary of Sociology provides full coverage of the field, clarifying the technical use of apparently common words, explaining the fundamental concepts in candid and entertaining ways, and introducing new and unfamiliar terms.

Making Sense of Science (London: Sage 2005) - The most authoritative guide to science studies and a book that successfully bridges the divide between social theory and the sociology of science. In this work Steve makes up for sociology's neglect of science studies and pinpoints the ways in which the sociology of science illuminates core sociological issues such as risk, expertise, the role of expert testimony and evidence, and public participation.

Cultures of Environmentalism (Basingstoke: Palgrave/Macmillan 2005, paperback edition 2009) - This book shows how much sociologists can bring to current debates over environmental topics (including urban air quality and the testing of genetically modified organisms) and - using the author's first-hand research - demonstrates how sociologists can best pursue practical work on environmental themes.

Steve's earlier publications:

Sociology, Environmentalism, Globalization (London: Sage 1996) - This book focuses on the construction of the global environment as a topic for campaigning, management or anxiety. Using detailed analyses of the global impacts of climate change and ozone depletion, Steve shows how the "global-ness" of environmental problems is made, contested and resolved. He analyses the politics of the use of the 'global' label and shows how the recognition of global environmental problems is the outcome of diplomatic, scientific and economic struggles.

The Green Case: A Sociology of Environmental Arguments, Issues and Politics (London: Harper Collins 1991, reprinted Routledge 1992 and 2014) - The Green Case provides a comprehensive and objective account of the basis of "green" arguments and their social and political implications.

Science, Technology and Social Change (London: Unwin Hyman 1988, reprinted Routledge 2014)

Science and Sociological Practice (Milton Keynes: Open University Press 1984) edited with Maureen McNeil and Ian Varcoe The New Reproductive Technologies (London: Macmillan 1990)
