Dr Birgit Van Puymbroeck (Ghent University / IASH Fellow): Twentieth-Century Bards: Hugh MacDiarmid, Radio, and Cultural Identity

ABSTRACT: After a brief introduction to her project on bardic traditions on air, Birgit Van Puymbroeck explores how the Scottish avant-garde author Hugh MacDiarmid (1892-1978) made use of modern media cultures to revive the position of the poet as modern bard in the early- and mid-twentieth century, assuming a position of cultural authority and speaking as the 'voice of the nation'.
