An IASH Work-in-Progress seminar, delivered by Dr Obinna Nwokike (RACE.ED Archival Research Fellow 2021-22; Benson Idahosa University)

The Sudan United Mission and Activities in Nigeria

Through this seminar presentation, I want to draw attention to resourceful use of archives and collections as part of the Institute Project on Decoloniality. There has been an increased interest in studies on decoloniality. However, these studies hardly provide the structure to bring a clear understanding of decoloniality across different academic disciplines and topics. In this seminar, I will discuss some of the activities of the Sudan United Mission in Nigeria from a decoloniality perspective that raises critical questions about this mission’s outcomes. This will bring a better understanding of the subjugation of indigenous perspectives for the adoption of foreign (Arab and European) perspectives in northern Nigeria. Like many other colonial missions, the Sudan United Mission’s activities have outlived formal colonization and continue to structure social practices in those communities today.
