As part of Refugee Festival Scotland, filmmaker and IASH alumnus Javad Daraei will present two short films made in Iran, alongside footage from a new film that he is currently developing in Scotland. After the screening, Javad will be in conversation with curator Xuanlin Tham.

I Don’t Like Here (2016). A trans teenager seeks his true self despite rejection by Iranian society and the inability of his parents to understand.

Limit (2017). A man in a quiet neighbourhood asks for help from people whom he is seeing until someone suddenly enters his home…

Join us for a remarkable live performance featuring Yemeni pianist, Saber Bamatraf, a former IASH Fellow, whose moving compositions draw from his deep personal experiences as a war refugee from Yemen now residing in Scotland. Saber will be accompanied by the talented Phil Westwell (uilleann pipes, flute and whistle) and Katherine Campbell (cello).

Join us for a special screening and Q&A with Moayed Abu Ammouna, a Palestinian filmmaker and artist whose powerful work spans film, photography, and experimental storytelling. Originally from Gaza City, Abu Ammouna’s art explores themes of land, identity, displacement, and the ongoing trauma of colonialism. He is the 2025 Artist at Risk Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) at the University of Edinburgh.
