The Forensic Turn in Modern Britain and Japan: Criminology, the Human Sciences, and Detective Fiction

This presentation explores the emergence of the “forensic turn” in late 19th century Britain and Japan initiated by Scottish physician Henry Faulds' discovery of scientific applications for fingerprinting. It seeks to retrace the fitful steps whereby new forms of evidence-making propelled the evolution of modern detective fiction, policing, and jurisprudence.
