Project: Sign language brokering in deaf communities
Jemina Napier is exploring how mediated intercultural encounters occur, to compare non-professional sign language interpreting (brokering) with the brokering that takes place in first and second generation immigrant families where parents have little or no competency in the majority language; as well as comparing with encounters that are mediated by professional interpreters in the same contexts. This relates to her previous interdisciplinary work on professional sign language interpreting in different institutional settings. She has widely published on sign language interpreting ideologies and practice, and on interpreting research methods.
