Research Fellow (University of Edinburgh’s Historical Links to African Enslavement and Colonialism), 2022-2024

Home Institution: University of Edinburgh

Yarong is a research fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, University of Edinburgh. She is involved in the project Decolonized Transformations: Confronting the UoE's Legacies of Enslavement and Colonialism. The project investigates the University of Edinburgh’s historical links to African enslavement and colonialism and their racial legacies. Yarong is conducting two questionnaires to capture the present racial climate in the University. Information about the questionnaires, and how to take part, can be found at the project’s blogsite: https://blogs.ed.ac.uk/decolonise/category/questionnaire-studies/

Yarong specialises in conversation analysis and discursive psychology. Her PhD (2018-2022, University of Edinburgh) investigates how people report their or their family’s experiences of racism in broadcast interviews and online forums. Her doctoral work showed that reporting racism is a collaborative accomplishment. People do not report racism as a soliloquy, but for someone. Sympathetic and affiliative responses are pivotal in recognising and legitimising the racism reported. She organised and delivered a public engagement event for the 2023 ESRC Festival of Social Sciences, in collaboration with a sociologist, a human geographer and a social psychologist from the University of Edinburgh. The event attracted parents, teachers/educators, police officers, and members working for the Council.
