Dr Regan Burles

IASH Affiliate, 2025-26

Dr Regan Burles joined the School of Social and Political Science as Lecturer in International Relations in 2024. He taught previously in the Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University where he was Co-Director of the Centre for the International Politics of Knowledge. Prior to that he was a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Politics and International Relations at Queen Mary University of London. Regan’s research examines how scientific and philosophical concepts of order shape world politics. At present his work focuses on ‘systemic’ conceptions of order found in Kant, nineteenth and twentieth century geopolitics, and twentieth century systems theories, including international relations. The project investigates how a particular ideal of order - systematic unity - orients the relationship between human beings, the earth, and political authority on a world scale. Through this research Regan’s work  intervenes in debates on the politics of global space, geopolitics and history, race and international order, complexity and systems theories, and the Anthropocene.
