Dr Ivar Vargas Rivas

Dr Ivar Vargas Rivas is a Tutor in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Social and Political Science.

His research examines the intricate political effects of governing modern autonomous warfare in the name of humanity, with a focus on contemporary humanitarian efforts to regulate artificial intelligence-enabled autonomous weapons. Ivar is currently writing his first book with Edinburgh University Press. The monograph, entitled “Humanising War: Killer Robots, the United Nations and the Paradoxes of Humanitarianism” will be published in the interdisciplinary book series Advances in Critical Military Studies. 

Ivar holds a PhD in Politics from the University of Edinburgh and a Master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Melbourne. He is an Associate Fellow of Advance HE (AFHEA).
