Dr Diego Maria Malara

Postdoctoral Fellow, September 2018 to June 2019

Project title: The Orthodox Atlantic: Blackness, Diasporic Re‐Connections, and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

Diego Maria Malara is a lecturer in Anthropology at the University of Glasgow. His primary research focuses on Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. He has published extensively on love and hierarchy, fasting and ethics, discipline and lenience and ritual healing in urban Ethiopia (https://glasgow.academia.edu/DiegoMariaMalara). 

Beyond classic anthropological methods, Diego Maria Malara has a keen interest in visual ethnography. His recent documentary film 'The Devil and the Holy Water', which explores modern forms of public exorcism in Addis Ababa, has won several international awards.

At IASH, he is working on a new project, which investigates the relationship between Afro-Caribbean communities and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
