Project Title: Decolonization of Religion and Indian Nationalism: a Study of Jagannatha Temple at Puri, Odisha, India from the 19th to 20th Century
The sacred temple of Lord Jagannatha at Puri is not only a well-known Hindu pilgrimage Centre but is also an institution of national importance in India. The British occupied Odisha and took over administration and management of the Jagannatha temple from 1803 to 1947 and appointed king of Puri as superintendent of the temple. Many Indian and foreign scholars have visited Puri and have made their significant works on Lord Jagannatha and rituals of the temple. In this context, a research study is proposed for documentation of the history of Administration and Management of the Jagannatha Temple, Puri during colonial and post-colonial times. The research will be based on secondary data and literatures available in the Library and Archive of the University of Edinburgh relating to the Jagannatha Temple at Puri and drawing valuable opinions from scholars and the wider intellectual community in the UK.
