Dr Shabnur Parveen

Dr. Shabnur Parveen is currently a Visiting Research Fellow at the Department of Arab, Islamic and Oriental Studies, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain. She received her PhD in 2026 from the English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, India. Her thesis, entitled Negotiating Racial Grief: Faith, Food and Humour as Modalities of Embodied Resistance in Select Muslim Women's Life-writing, focuses on survival strategies and feminist resistance within racial grief as a form of political suffering in the post-9/11 world. She addresses a critical gap by examining Muslim women's autobiographies as an important corpus for understanding the racial position of Muslims in global contexts. During her PhD, she was awarded the prestigious Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship (2023-2024) at the Centre for Gender Studies, University of Lausanne. Over the past six years, Shabnur has examined race, religion, gender, and feminist resistance across national and transnational contexts. Her work has been published in reputed journals, including Comedy Studies and Social Identities.
Project Title: The Gendered Dimension of Racial Emotions: Muslim Women in India
The project focuses on state-produced popular literature on and about Muslim women incontemporary India. Drawing on raciolinguistics and intersectional feminist theory, it examines how the language of anti-Muslim racism produces specific emotional experiences of racial discrimination. The project identifies the contemporary condition of Muslims in India as a racial condition, with particular attention to Muslim women's situation and the emotional dimensions of racialisation.
