An IASH Work-in-Progress seminar, delivered by Dr Raewyn Martyn (Heritage Collections Research Fellow, 2024-25)
Shape Memories
In this IASH Work in Progress presentation, Raewyn will share her starting points for creating site-responsive artwork for the GeoSciences buildings at Kings Campus. Over the past three weeks, Raewyn has been working with staff from GeoSciences to identify aspects of the geological models collection that can help us understand stone buildings as living geological models that integrate cultural and ecological contexts.
Like many buildings of their age in Edinburgh, the Sciences buildings are constructed of sandstone that results from ancient interrelated biological and geological processes. In their contemporary state, these stone structures continue to host a range of active processes including the accumulation of biofilms, lichens, and moss. They are also host to subtle biomineralisation processes — where new layers of mineral deposit are generated through microbial activity within and on the stone. The edges, surfaces, and porous bulk of the buildings’ stonework continues to change as the uncertain present carves a future from the unknowns of deep time past.
