Baboons and the biology of apotheosis

Baboons are a recurring motif in ancient Egyptian art and religion, from Predynastic statuettes to later mortuary traditions, including wall paintings, reliefs, amulets, and statues—a tradition exceeding 3,000 years. Scholarship on the subject has tended toward the summative or interpretive, with an overarching focus on the symbolic meaning of a particular composition or object. This work-in-progress seminar will review the representation of baboons through a different lens, drawing on anatomy, natural history, and behavioral ecology to better understand the reasons for their deification by ancient Egyptians.
