Dr Emily MayneLocating Hercules in Early Modern England: Myths, Texts, Receptions

The Graeco-Roman hero Hercules was a popular and occasionally controversial figure for early modern readers and writers: sometimes an emblem of virtue, sometimes of vice, and sometimes, troublingly, a mixture of both. In this talk, based on research for my first book project, Locating Hercules: Mythology and the Dynamics of Allusion in Early Modern English Writing, I will discuss the receptions of Hercules in early modern England, and the implications of the study of this particular mythological figure for understanding early modern uses of and attitudes towards classical myths more generally.
