Editing the Nineteenth Century
Professor Timothy Fulford (De Montfort University and Professor Jane Stabler (University of St Andrews)
Editing the writings of Romantic and nineteenth-century literary figures has proven to be perennially controversial. In some cases, a wealth of pre-publication material – drafts, fair copies, proofs, revises – creates challenges for editors trying to reconstruct the textual history of a work. In others, post-publication revisions complicate editors’ aspirations of arriving at a definitive text. In still others, the interventions of earlier editors – including family members, generate further complexity. In this seminar, we will hear from two experienced editors about their work in progress, their understanding of the editorial process, and their uses of digital technologies.
