Matthew Ratcliffe (York): Psychopathology, Interpersonal Experience, and the Sense of Reality

 Abstract:

 In this talk, I will explore the relationship between interpersonal experience and the ‘sense of reality’. I will argue that, in order to understand various kinds of anomalous experience, it is essential to distinguish the extent to which something appears present or the degree of confidence with which it is taken to be the case from the kind of presence or certainty involved, the manner in which it appears present or certain. I will further suggest that alterations in the sense of presence and reality are inextricable from changes in the structure of interpersonal experience.
