Christopher de Hamel, ‘The Duc de Berry (1340-1416) as a Book Collector’

 

Author of the prizewinning  Meetings with Remarkable Manuscripts, Christopher de Hamel was until recently fellow librarian of the Parker Library at Corpus Christi college, Cambridge, and  is the author of numerous books on medieval manuscripts. The lecture will look primarily at the Duc as one of the first collectors of antiquarian books. It will consider what he bought and how it was possible to gather old books in the fourteenth century. It will compare his collecting of relics and jewels, and it will ask whether the Duc was a true bibliophile in the modern sense.
