Festival Overview:
The University of Edinburgh’s Empirical Legal Research Network (ELRN) serves as a nexus for those interested in empirical research and the study of law in society. This Empirical Legal Research Festival, taking place on Tuesday 24th April from 4.00pm-8.00pm in the Project Room (50 George Square), will comprise three parts:
This April event comprises three parts:
1. 16:00-17:30: Workshop. Speakers from within and outwith the University of Edinburgh will offer insights into how one ‘does’ empirical legal research using different types of methods. They will address successes, practical tips, and how to avoid potential pitfalls.
The speakers for this workshop are tentatively scheduled to be:
- Dr Jackie Gulland (School of Social and Political Science, UoE) – socio-legal approaches to welfare rights and decision-making
- Dr Smita Kheria (School of Law, UoE) – empirical intellectual property research
- Ms Sarah MacQueen (School of Law, UoE) – quantitative methods in ELR
- Dr Elbert de Jong (Utrecht) - 'Tort’s public life: a study into the influences of tort adjudication on public and private risk management in the health and environmental domain'
2. 17:30-18:00: Meet-and-Greet/ PechaKucha presentations. We will then have a short informal meet-and-greet to get to know members of the University community who share an interest in empirical legal research. During this time, we also encourage people to do PechaKucha presentations (i.e. 20 slides are shown for 20 seconds each) to present their empirical legal research in a lively and engaging format. If you are interested in doing a PechaKucha presentation, please send me an email with your proposed topic.
3. 18:00-19:00: Annual Lecture. This informal meet-and-greet/presentation activity will be followed by an inaugural ELRN Annual Lecture. We are delighted that Professor Reza Banakar, Chair in Legal Sociology at Lund University, will share his reflections on empirical legal research. His lecture will be followed by a Q&A and a wine reception.
Wine and canapés will be available throughout the duration of the Festival to encourage mingling – and, of course, conviviality
Everyone (staff and students) is invited to attend the Festival. Registration is free - https://elrn_festival_2018.eventbrite.co.uk
