The Prime Minister’s negotiations with other EU member states of the UK’s position in the European Union are in full swing and might well be concluded at the EU summit on 19 and 20 February. This provides a good occasion for reflection about how we can we best understand the current debate about the UK’s membership of the European Union.
In his lecture at the Europa Institute, Professor Lord William Wallace will review Britain’s EU membership debate and argue that both the European Union and the United Kingdom should be considered ‘imagined communities’, whose construction and disintegration tells us a lot about their current relationship.
Lord Wallace of Saltaire is emeritus professor of international relations at the LSE and a Liberal Democrat life peer. Lord Wallace was a member of the Ministerial 'star chamber' that oversaw the UK Government's Balance of Competences review exercise.
