An Evening in Conversation with Tatyana Tolstaya

Date: Tuesday 28th March 2017, 6:30-8:00pm

Location: G.03 Lecture Theatre (ground floor), 50 George Square, Edinburgh EH8 9JU

Arguably the most well-known contemporary writer and public intellectual in Russia, Tatyana Tolstaya belongs to the Tolstoy family that included the literary giant Leo Tolstoy and the Soviet writer Alexei Tolstoy.

Known for her collections of short fiction, the anti-utopian novel The Slynx (Kys’), and her acerbic essays on contemporary Russian life, Tolstaya was also starring as a TV host of the long-running Russian cultural interview show School for Scandal (Shkola Zlosloviia). According to The Washington Post, she is "considered by many critics and writers to be the foremost writer of her generation, a miniaturist whose stories combine the linguistic stardust of Vladimir Nabokov and the emotional wisdom of Anton Chekhov".

On her visit to the University of Edinburgh, Tatyana Tolstaya will talk about her work, share memories of life under the Soviet regime, and answer questions.

This event is organised by The Princess Dashkova Russian centre in partnership with the University of Glasgow Russian Speaking Society.

The event is in English. Tickets are limited.

Standard admission: £15.00; students/under 18: £7.00
