It is my great pleasure to invite you all to a special guest talk entitled “Mapping the mind on the brain”, by Prof Eugenio Rodríguez, from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. He is at the present time in a sabbatical in the University of Cambridge. His work is focused on developing new methods of analysis of neural activity, involving neural dynamics at different scales, especially for the study of consciousness and volition. He is a renowned expert in the study of phase synchronisation and large-scale integration with EEG, for the study of consciousness and perceptual awareness, work that now also encompasses the study of different mind states and psychotherapy. Prof Rodríguez was a PhD student of Francisco Varela, and has continued his work on the scientific study of consciousness.

Here is the abstract of Prof Rodríguez talk:

“During the last years we have been trying to understand mind states as subserved by mechanisms of brain large-scale self-organization. Here I will summarize some of these results showing the theoretical reasons to believe that neural synchrony is involved in neural self-organization, along with a few experiments showing the involvement of neural synchrony in: a) visual perception, b) conscious awareness, c) impaired perception in schizophrenia and d) the maturation of neural networks during normal development. Finally I will present the new lines of research conducted by other members of the lab.”
