Data for Humanists: Finding and Acquiring Data from Online Sources
Date: Tuesday 10 January 2017
Time: 14.00 – 16.00
Place: uCreate Studio, 1.12 Main Library
Bring: Your own laptop
At the outset of digital humanities projects, it’s often necessary to review data resources and establish the parameters of the data you may have or need to acquire. It can be too costly for individual researchers to produce, record or maintain rich and layered data, but cultural institutions and public authorities are increasingly making their rich data freely available online. This workshop focuses on how to identify, find and source the most relevant data sets. It will introduce you to a variety of data sources and show you how to use the UK Data Service, Europeana and other major portals, giving you the opportunity to browse for data relevant to your own research. We’ll look at some of the different processes involved in acquiring data sets and some of the formats in which data can be presented, and the kinds of challenges that arise when working with datasets compiled by others, including the potential copyright and licensing issues related to using data you have found online.
This workshop is aimed at those new to digital research or interested in using new sources for their research and does not cover processes of data curation and manipulation.
Spaces at this event are strictly limited and will be in demand. Please only register if you are definitely able to come.
