International workshop: ‘Poetic strategies in the time of political repression’

This Princess Dashkova Russian Centre invites you to a workshop held in association with the Department of European Languages and Literatures ‘Language and Violence’ Research Strand, and in partnership with the Russian Rudomino State Library of Foreign Literature and The Institute of Translation (Moscow). The workshop is dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the birth of the Russian poet Osip Mandelstam who died in Stalin’s GULAG. The speakers are:
Peter France (The University of Edinburgh), ‘Another Absolutism: Louis XIV and his Poets’?
Andrew Reynolds (University of Wisconsin-Madison), “Willing executioner?”: Death as the last creative act in Mandelstam’s later poetry
Oleg Lekmanov (National Research University, Moscow). A dialogue between the poet and the executioner: Mandelstam’s poem ‘You must dominate me’.
Maxim Amelin (poet, writer and translator, Moscow), tba.
