The Institute was saddened to hear of the recent death of renowned Classical scholar and IASH alumnus Professor David Konstan.
Professor Konstan was a Nominated Fellow in early 2014, working on his book Beauty: The Fortunes of an Ancient Greek Idea (Oxford University Press, 2014). He was accompanied by his wife, Dr Pura Nieto Hernández, also an IASH Fellow. In March of that year, they led a Classics afternoon at IASH, chaired by Professor Jolyon Mitchell and Professor Douglas Cairns. Previously, in 2001, Professor Konstan had come to Edinburgh as Visiting Leventis Professor where he organised a conference on 'Envy, Spite and Jealousy: The Rivalrous Emotions in Classical Antiquity'.
Born in New York City, a son of the late Harry and Edythe (Wahrman) Konstan, he had lived in Providence for many years.
Professor Konstan taught at Brown from 1987-2010, when he retired; from 1992-2010 he was the John Rowe Workman Distinguished Professor of Classics and the Humanistic Tradition and Professor in Comparative Literature. Previous to coming to Brown, he taught for 20 years at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. He was teaching part time in the Classics Department at New York University.
