The Research and Engagement Working Group (REWG) on Engaging with the University of Edinburgh’s Historical Links to African Enslavement and Colonialism and their Racial Legacies Today was set up in January 2022 in response to the Principal’s announcement that the University of Edinburgh (UoE) would begin a bold decolonization and reparatory justice programme dedicated looking at ‘issues of race, contemporary racism, Eurocentric and Afriphobic aspects of our curriculum and features of the University’s history’ (January 2021). Five positions are now available, based at IASH, with closing dates for application in late July and early August.

We are looking for a Research Fellow working in the social sciences to undertake research over a two-year period on how, and in what ways, categories of race have been constructed and mobilised within the institutional life of the University of Edinburgh. Pursued thematically, it is anticipated that this work will chart historical and contemporary developments in racial thought that will contribute to the work of the Research and Engagement Working Group (REWG) on Engaging with the University of Edinburgh’s Historical Links to African Enslavement and Colonialism and their Racial Legacies Today.

The Research Assistant will be welcomed into the Research and Engagement Working Group that is looking at the University of Edinburgh’s historical links to African enslavement and colonialism and their racial legacies today (hereafter, the REWG). The role of the Research Assistant is to help collect racial and ethnic data, coordinate, research activities, including organizing meetings, collecting data from various executive and college level entities and analysing said data alongside the co-chairs and other post-doctoral fellows. The post holder will work closely with co-chairs and members of the REWG to ensure that research, data collection and data analyses are accurately represented in the work conducted as part of the University’s broader review into its history and legacies of slavery and colonialism and present-day manifestations of racism and discrimination.

The Community Engagement Officer's role will be to ensure that community engagement, education and knowledge exchange are central to this work by developing and delivering an engagement strategy and a programme of activities that will allow us to better understand communities' perceptions of the university's links to the development and dissemination of racial science, colonialism and enslavement, and in developing and exploring appropriate reparatory justice actions.
