29th March: Stergios Chatzikyriakidis, Gothenburg: A fragment answer inspired view of afterthoughts: gender mismatches in Greek

[Linguistic Circle]

In this talk, I will discuss the syntax of afterthoughts in Greek taking a fragment answer inspired, dynamic view. The main claim I am going to be making is that afterthoughts can receive a straightforward explanation once we make the assumption that these can be seen as fragment answers to implicit questions. A formal syntactic account based on this assumption will be put forth and its ability to deal with gender mismatches exhibited in Greek afterthoughts will be shown. Then, afterthoughts are going to be discussed from a more general perspective: the argument would be that once we turn into a dynamic model of syntax where context re-use and update are taken to be core components of the system itself, a number of issues w.r.t afterthoughts like connectivity effects, locality constraints, freedom of positioning and reconstruction effects can receive a straightforward explanation.
