Quantitative methods masterclass in humanities research: A Masterclass by professor Matthew Wilkens (Edinburgh, 19-21 September 2016)
If you are a Scotland-based researcher in the humanities with a project that uses some form of quantification and are keen to enrich your insights into computational criticism, look no further: Professor Matthew Wilkens (English, University of Notre Dame) will be delivering a masterclass on quantitative methods in central Edinburgh from Monday the 19th till Wednesday the 21st of September 2016!
The University of Edinburgh Development Trust awarded an Innovation Initiative Grant to Dr Maria Filippakopoulou towards the 3-day masterclass with the aim of demonstrating to humanities researchers the potential and achievements of quantitative methods. Assuming no prior training in programming, it offers a broad overview of text-mining and text-analysis methods. As Matt himself put it, the masterclass “is not an introduction to programming, nor a reading group, nor a tools workshop, but it incorporates a little of each of those things”. Upon completion of the training, participants are expected to:
- gain in confidence and creativity when considering quantitative methodologies for their own projects
- become contributors to and advocates of quantitative research
You can find more details about the content of the masterclass at:

Matthew Wilkens’ own work on computational literature has been at the forefront of developments in the field. His research, based on natural language processing methods, has provided large-scale evidence for the transnational and transatlantic grounding of American imagination in the nineteenth century, thereby joining other seminal contributions of quantitative-based research.
Although registration is now closed, you can still register for Wilkens’ Lecture on the topic of "Computation and Abundance: Quantitative Methods for Humanities Inquiry" that will take place at the close of the masterclass (21 September) or to join the waiting list for the workshops here: http://goo.gl/forms/Owfr3gNuPXUNU7mu2
