Susan Pedersen, Professor and James P. Shenton Professor of the Core Curriculum, Columbia University: Women at the Secretariat of the League of Nations
http://history.columbia.edu/faculty/Pedersen.html
The Secretariat of the League of Nations was unusual in stipulating that all positions were to be open equally to women and men. And indeed, while most senior post were held by men, a significant number of women, especially British women who had worked as temporary civil servants during the First World War, joined the Geneva secretariat as clerks, secretaries, translators and typists. Based on research in League personnel files, this talk recovers the lives, culture, commitments and impact of this first cohort of British women to serve as international civil servants.
