Between 1978 and 1986, the University of Edinburgh’s Kenneth Murray led a programme of ground-breaking research and development that was instrumental in the creation of the first ever recombinant DNA vaccines, targeting hepatitis B. But how did Murray become involved in this venture? And what of the peculiar combination of circumstances, both local and international, that enabled him to become a leader in the new field of biotechnology? This talk will explore these questions, shedding light both on the man and on this fascinating episode in the history of Edinburgh medical science.
