Seminar: Market power, economic regulation and regional value chains in southern Africa

A strong theme in the development agenda of donors over the past decade and more has been to 'make markets work'. One aspect of this has been the promotion of competition laws and competition authorities. This lecture considers the ways markets work in practice drawing on research in southern Africa on a range of markets and value chains. Reference will be made to markets for agricultural products and inputs, in particular. The record of competition enforcement in South Africa will then be critically assessed in light of it being held up as an example of a successful competition regime.

He was previously Chief Economist and Head of the Policy & Research Division, Competition Commission of South Africa, 2006-2012.
