An IASH Work-in-Progress seminar, delivered by Professor Catherine M. Roach (Visiting Research Fellow 2021-22; University of Alabama)

Fabulous and Bedazzling: A Project of Pleasure Activism in which The Slave Breaks Free, Decolonializes into Her Glamorous Goddess Self, and Invites You along to the Party

This experimental humanities project combines gender studies with art history on the famous 19th-century statue The Greek Slave to tell a gripping story about today’s most pressing issues of bilateral social justice: the US and UK’s ongoing reckoning with racial and sexual justice movements. It’s a tale of transatlantic art and slavery that ties our two countries together from the 19th century to the present day.  I aim for my Work-in-Progress seminar on this arts-research collaboration to feel more like a fun pub quiz than an academic paper.  Please show up in person only; there will be cookies and door prizes!

Please note that this session will not be available on Zoom Webinar. If you are not a current Fellow and wish to attend, please email iash@ed.ac.uk to reserve a seat.
