Activating Colonial Privilege: The Imperial Strategies of Highland Catholics, 1750-1820

This talk will consider colonial privilege – the spectrum of advantages inherent in the White European settler experience – and its application to those considered settlers of last resort. As a case study, we will look at three sections of the Clanranald Macdonalds from the Western Highlands and their migration to what is today known as the Canadian Maritimes. The long-standing discrimination endured by the Catholics among them was a major catalyst in precipitating successive waves of large-scale transatlantic emigrations and the intensification of settler colonialism. Their presence within colonial spaces changed the shape and reach of the British imperial enterprise.
