The Power of Examples: Practitioner-Research in Counselling and Psychotherapy

When: June 2nd 2016

This seminar reflects on a book we have recently co-edited in which we make the case for, and provide examples of, an approach to research that does not seek to generalise or objectify, but instead that stays close to therapeutic work and therapeutic relationships as they are experienced. We put forward a way of thinking about and doing research characterised by rich, creative examples deeply informed by the values and principles of practice in the field of counselling and psychotherapy. We make our case by drawing on arguments developed in the social sciences about the limitations of approaches to research modelled on the natural sciences, about the importance of practical wisdom and about the power of examples for developing knowledge about the human world. Followed by an invitation to continue the discussions across the road at ‘Doctors’. No need to book.
