This three-day hybrid conference aims to interrogate the ongoing challenges involved in the decolonial process of the Maghreb from an interdisciplinary and multilingual perspective. As a socio-political space with its own extensive history of colonisation and civil unrest, the Maghreb is the locus of a shifting conception of national and cultural identity in the wake of prolonged conflict. Its geographical location, on the border of the ‘Occident’ (Europe and the Mediterranean) and the ‘Orient’ (Middle East and Africa) – along with its religious, ethnolinguistic, and cultural diversity – makes it an ideal focus for discussions on transnationalism and postcolonialism more broadly.
As part of the event, there will be a film screening of award-winning documentary This Jungo Life and we will also be launching the Maghrebi Studies Network – a knowledge exchange forum for scholars across the globe to foster ongoing discussion and awareness of current issues facing the region. Presentations will be in English and French.

This conference is hybrid, so all keynotes and panels will be live-streamed except for the film screening and Q&A with the director. There is also a half-day on Sat 21st that is entirely online.There is no cost and the conference dinner will be heavily subsidised.
If you can’t make the conference but would still like to attend the film screening on Friday 20th, 4-6pm, there is the option to register just for this. We will be showing David Fedele’s award-winning documentary This Jungo Life (2024), and there will also be a Q&A with the director and a recorded presentation from the ‘protagonist’ and assistant director, Abubakr Ali. The film, on Moroccan migration, was shot entirely on mobile phones and in collaboration with the refugees it features. Please register for in-person attendance by Thurs June 12th.
