Abstract:

Although industrial film has constituted a substantial proportion of non-fiction film production in many countries, little attention has been paid to it. Film studies have focused primarily on art cinema, while utilitarian films commissioned by state or private companies has been usually neglected. In the case of Chile, industrial film represented a significant production particularly during the 1950s and 1960s when art and entertainment cinema decreased considerably. Industrial film not only provides an insight into an ignored aspect of Chilean cinematography, but also expands the possibilities of understanding the creative processes of filmmakers and the uses of music during those years.

Through the analysis of a relevant selection of industrial films produced between 1960 and 1970, this paper explores the development of this genre in Chile and how music became a significant aspect of its narrative. I argue that experimental techniques can be traced in certain films which opposed conventional narrative of the genre by including avant-garde compositions and utilising unusual pre-existent music which contributes to creating complex meanings within the films. I also discuss the extent to which industrial film became a place for learning and experimentation among filmmakers and composers.
