Kate McLean - “Polyrhythmia of the smellwalk: mapping multi-scalar temporalities”
Monday 6th February, 3.30pm
Old Library, Institute of Geography and the Lived Environment, Drummond Street
Abstract:
Using research through design this project investigates the layers of rhythms experienced during a smellwalk through its subsequent mapping.
The multi-scalar temporalities of the smellscape are revealed through conversations, notes, performance, landscape, photographs and the interplay of theory and practice in map creation. This ontogenetic and performative approach to mapping practices suggests future scenarios of olfactory awareness are best contextualised in an ecological, temporo-spatial framework.
Kate McLean is an artist, designer and mapper of urban smellscapes. She is a senior lecturer in Graphic Design at Canterbury Christ Church University and a PhD candidate at the Royal College of Art. Kate currently has a smellmap exhibited in the National Library of Scotland.
