Has India become the Hindu rashtra?
Even those who do not follow current events in India very closely will be aware of momentous developments since the re-election of Narendra Modi in April-May 2019. Only the most notable of these are the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution, regarding the special status of Kashmir within the Union of India, and subsequently the judgement of the Supreme Court regarding the future of the site once occupied by the Babri Masjid. The purpose of this paper is to review the actions of BJP-led governments since 2014 in regard to the long run objectives of Hindu nationalists for the creation of a Hindu rashtra, and to form an assessment of long run trends in Indian politics.
