Dr Gillian Dooley and Laura Klein present a programme of songs and piano music drawn from Jane Austen’s own sheet music collection, including French, Scottish, and Irish music, and some songs that Austen’s niece Caroline remembers her singing in the last years of her life.
Gillian Dooley is a literary scholar and a singer based at Flinders University in South Australia, and is currently a Fellow at IASH at the University of Edinburgh. She is the author of She Played and Sang: Jane Austen and Music (Manchester University Press, 2024).
Laura Klein is a pianist and musicologist based in the USA. She is visiting the UK as the Jane Austen Society of North America’s International Visitor Program 2026 Fellow. She curates The Jane Austen Playlist (www.thejaneaustenplaylist.com), a series of programs drawn from the Austen Family Music Books, and is currently completing a PhD on Austen’s piano music.
Gillian and Laura have presented many programs of Jane Austen’s music during the UK summer months over the past three years and performed together in Cleveland at the 2024 Jane Austen Society of North America Annual General Meeting.
