Tuesday 4th April 2017 – 12.30 to 15.00 – 2.14 Appleton Tower
The Innovative Initiative Fund (IIF) Presents: “Unrecognized in the Shadows: The Plight of the Stateless”
The panel will provide a framework on the complicated issue of statelessness and raise awareness of the implications that statelessness has on the enjoyment of human rights. The event aims to stimulate the debate among academics, professionals and students and to enable them to share their views on statelessness.
Panellists include :
Omar I. Alansari, Queen’s University Belfast
Deirdre Brennan, Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion
Cynthia Orchard, AsylumAid
Nina Murray, European Network on Statelessness
The panel will be chaired by Professor Jo Shaw (University of Edinburgh).
This will be followed by a short panel comprised of three students who will discuss situations of statelessness in their home contexts (a student from Palestine, a student from Latvia who will talk about Russians in Latvia, and a student who will talk about Guam). This part of the event is meant to take more of a subjective and personal approach to the issue. The panels will be followed by a Q&A session in which all attendees are warmly invited to participate. Tea, coffee and light snacks will be provided.
The event is sponsored by the Global Justice Academy (@GlobalJusticeEd) and the Global Development Academy (@GDA_Ed) through their joint Innovative Initiative Fund.
