An IASH Work-in-Progress Seminar given by Dr Sydney Ayers.
The Global Adam Style: Robert Adam and British Neoclassical Architecture beyond Britain, 1760-1830
Robert Adam (1728-1792) was one of the leading architects in eighteenth-century Britain. Yet his reach did not end in Britain as his eponymous style, the Adam Style, was utilised in buildings, interiors, furniture, and other decorative arts around the world from 1760 to 1830. Despite the Adam Style’s widespread use, my research is the first sustained exploration of its influence and impact beyond Britain. It considers the complex process of a British design style’s translation, adoption and utilisation within different geographies, for various purposes—within Europe; across the Atlantic in Federal America, Colonial Canada, and the Caribbean; and further afield in the British Empire. My work-in-progress talk will give an overview of my project’s aims—with special attention to case studies embodying a range of critical issues and wider themes.
