How are museums documenting major political, social and cultural change? How does collecting the present help us rethink the past and reframe existing collections? What are the challenges and opportunities of contemporary collecting and rapid response programmes?

At this seminar, keynote speaker Dr Nancy Bercaw, Chair and Curator at the Political History Division, Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., will discuss approaches to collecting political change in the USA today, and reflect on the ways in which past practices impact how we consider the present moment.

Nick Smith of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar in Stornoway will speak about contemporary collecting in the Outer Hebrides with a focus drawing the thread between earliest human occupation and the product of the modern economy. Participants will also hear from Dr Sarah Laurenson, Curator of Modern and Contemporary History at National Museums Scotland, about collecting objects which document a shifting relationship with the Scottish landscape.

The speakers will make connections between common themes, reflecting on why it is important for museums across the world to collect history as it happens.

We invite you to join us for tea and coffee following the event to continue the conversation, foster new connections and encourage collaboration.
