Festival Overview:

The University of Edinburgh’s Empirical Legal Research Network (ELRN) serves as a nexus for those interested in empirical research and the study of law in society. This Empirical Legal Research Festival, taking place on Tuesday 30th April from 4.00pm-8.00pm in the Project Room (50 George Square), will comprise two parts:

1. The first part, roughly from 4-5.30pm, will be a ‘workshop’. Five speakers from within and outwith the University of Edinburgh will offer insights (over a 15-20 min presentation) into how one ‘does’ empirical legal research using different types of methods. They will address successes, practical tips, and how to avoid potential pitfalls. This may be illustrated through discussion of recently completed or ongoing empirical legal research. The five speakers confirmed for this workshop are Ariane Critchley (PhD candidate at the University of Edinburgh); Judy Warburton (PhD candidate at the University of Stirling); Annie Sorbie(Lecturer in Medical Law and Ethics at the University of Edinburgh); Daniel Behn (Lecturer at Liverpool Law School); and Aura Kostiainen (PhD candidate and the University of Helsinki).

2. This workshop will be followed by the ELRN Annual Lecture. We are delighted that Prof Rosemary Hunterof Kent Law School will deliver the second annual ELRN Lecture.

Wine and canapés will be available throughout the duration of the Festival to encourage mingling – and, of course, conviviality.

Everyone (staff and students) is invited to attend the Festival. Registration is free.
