An IASH Work-in-Progress seminar, delivered by Dr Timothy Cooper (Susan Manning Postdoctoral Fellow, 2023-24)
Introducing Micrographia: new music for period instruments, electronics, and video
In this presentation I will discuss my work towards a large-scale music project titled Micrographia which will be composed for recorder, counter-tenor, theorbo, baroque violin, baroque cello, electronics and video. The work takes its title from Robert Hooke’s 1655 treatise concerning observation made through microscope and telescope lenses.
This work builds on my previous work with performers specialising in music composed in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, that perform on period instruments (faithful replicas of instruments from a specific historical period). In a project exploring the life of English Renaissance composer John Dowland I developed an increasingly collaborative approach to composing, devolving creative agency to the performers, which is an approach that will be built upon in this project.
I will outline the overarching aims of the project and discuss the work I have done so far with colleagues László Rózsa and Emma Lloyd towards movements titled observations of fiery sparks and observations of feathers.
