Egypt and the Odyssey: The Ancient Egyptian Influences on Archaic Greek Epic

The ancient Egyptian influences on ancient Greek culture and literature are a vitally important but hugely understudied area of research.  This talk gives an overview of the groundbreaking discoveries of my current book project, which undertakes the first comprehensive study of the Egyptian cultural and literary influences on Homeric epic.  My book reveals that the Odyssey was heavily influenced by ancient Egyptian travel literature and royal narratives.  It surveys the full range of different types of Egyptian cultural influence on Homeric poetry, and provides a revolutionary new assessment of the oral developmental history of the Odyssey.
