Dr Maria Alonso Alonso (University of Vigo, IASH Fellow): Tales of Insurgency and Resistance: Latin American Arts Strike Back Against Femicide

This talk will be based on my current research, which explores the responses to violence against women through works by contemporary Latin American artists. The need to strike back against femicide, a plight that spreads far beyond Latin American borders, is the motivation for a numerous reactions at both private and public levels. Literature, the visual arts and music are modes of expression that represent a powerful example of how activism can be exerted in the most diverse manners in order to denounce and revolve against femicide. Therefore, attention will be paid to the works produced by a number of artists that exert their activism from within their art in order to denounce and fight against gender-based violence.
